DEFINITION
"Dangerous goods are materials or items which, due to their characteristics or their state during transport or storage, if incorrectly handled, can give rise to dangers for public safety and order, the environment and for the life and health of persons and animals."
TRANSPORT
The transport of dangerous goods is governed nationally by the – German Regulation on the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, Rail and Inland Waterways and internationally by the – ADR European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road– RID Regulations Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail and the– IMDG Code INTERNATIONAL MARITIME DANGEROUS GOODS Code

STORAGE
The storage of dangerous materials is governed by the following regulations– German Regulation on Health and Safety at Work– German Technical Rules on Flammable Liquids– German Water Management Act and– German Regulation on Installations Handling Substances Hazardous to Water.
A distinction is made between passive and active storage. Passive storage is keeping flammable substances hazardous to water in tightly sealed containers, which were filled continuously (in one go) and are emptied (in one go) immediately after opening. During passive storage, no action is taken on the containers.
Active storage is keeping flammable substances hazardous to water in containers which are filled discontinuously at the location where they are stored, that is, over a lengthy period of time (collecting tanks), or discontinuously emptied (extraction tanks).
